South Africa Halt India’s Streak with 76-Run T20 World Cup Win
South Africa ended India’s 12-match T20 World Cup winning streak with a commanding 76-run victory, in a match that mirrored last tournament’s final between the two sides.
After a surprising call to bat first, South Africa recovered from 20 for 3 to post a competitive 187, thanks to explosive contributions from David Miller and Dewald Brevis. Despite losing momentum in the final overs, Tristan Stubbs’ quickfire 20 ensured a defendable total. India’s bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah (3-15) and Varun Chakravarthy (4-0-47-1), were effective early but could not halt South Africa’s recovery.
The South African bowling performance was near flawless. Aiden Markram dismissed opener Ishan Kishan for a duck in the first over, while Marco Jansen struck first ball. Lungi Ngidi bowled an unplayable spell with his slower deliveries, and Keshav Maharaj took three spectacular catches in one over. The Indian batters were restricted to a highest partnership of just 35, and dew-favored conditions did little to shift the advantage.
South Africa’s tactical and disciplined approach, combining tight bowling and exceptional fielding, not only halted India’s streak but also boosted their net-run-rate, setting up a tense Super 8s table moving forward.
